EPSEF 2021 - Virtual Edition

EPSEF 2021 Will Be Virtual

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, EPSEF 2021 will be held virtually.  All students in grades 6-12 from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia are eligible to enter.  For EPSEF 2021 only there is no requirement to advance through your school or county fair prior to competition in EPSEF 2021.

WVSEF 2021 Will Be Virtual

Officials from the West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair (WVSEF) announced today that the 2021 West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair will be held virtually. The change is for the 2021 fair only.

Each school will submit one project per grade band (3-5, 6-8, 9-12) to the state for judging. These projects are to be considered the school’s “best of fair” and will act as this year’s Science Ambassadors for West Virginia.  All projects will be completed individually this year (no teams or group projects) and will be submitted to the WVDE as a three to five minute video presentation (either video or voice over PowerPoint). All fair rules still apply.

School level science fair submissions will be submitted to WVDE beginning March 1, 2021 and continue through March 12, 2021. See the WVSEF's official website for more information.

 

EPSEF 2020 Official Results for Elementary and Middle School Competitions

More than 200 elementary and middle school students from West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle gathered at the Ranson Civic Center on Friday to compete in the region's annual science and engineering fair.  In addition to recognizing the top three projects from each category, the fair also recognized students' efforts with several special awards and prizes.  

Notable winners include:

All first-place category award winners from both Elementary and Middle School divisions now advance to compete in  WVSEF, the West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair, to be held Saturday, March 28 at Fairmont State University.  In addition, first-place category award winners from the Middle School Division are nominated to compete in the Broadcom MASTERS, the world's premeire science competition for middle school students.

With the announcement of indefinite state-wide school closures due to concerns of the community spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Eastern Panhandle Science and Engineering Fair - High School Division has been canceled.

 

Responding to concerns over the potential for community spread of the novel Coronavirus, officials from the West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair (WVSEF) announced today that the state science fair has been canceled. According to a message posted on WVSEF's official website, "As a precaution and under the advisement of Governor Jim Justice and state health officials, the West Virginia Department of Education has canceled the West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair, scheduled for March 28, 2020. The fair will not be rescheduled."

The Society for Science & the Public and Regeneron have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 Regeneron Science Talent Search (originally planned for March 5-11 in Washington, DC) until this summer out of an abundance of caution regarding COVID-19 and in order to prioritize the health and safety of everyone who attends the event. (more)

WVDE Takes Over the State Science Fair, Makes Changes

The 2020 West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair (WVSEF) will include grades 3 – 12 this school year. The event will be on Saturday, March 28, 2020, and will continue to be held at Fairmont State University.

The high school rules and documents will align to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), but the middle and elementary rules will be modified a bit to make participation on those levels more user-friendly. Students who compete on the high school level will be eligible for competition at the International Science and Engineering Fair on May 10-15, 2020 in Anaheim, CA.

WVDE is the process of finalizing resources for the WVSEF. A web site is being created that will provide links to the documents, as well. The website and registration process will be similar to what has been used for the West Virginia Social Studies Fair for several years.

When the documents and website are ready, the information will be shared on the Superintendents Weekly Update and other WVDE listservs, as well as, the TeacherOps and StudentOps websites.
